INTRODUCTION

TO spatial design

LECTURER: TAN SIN AI

Seeing is Believing

POINTS and LINES (EXERCISE PART ONE)

unknowingly WHAT TO DO, OUR LECTURER HAD GAVE US A HINT OF WHAT SHE HAS TO OFFER FOR THE VERY FIRST EXERCISE, THAT IS TO DETERMINE HOW POINTS, DOTS AND LINES ARE ALL CONNECTED AND IN RELEVANCE TOWARDS THE THINGS WE SEE IN DAILY LIFE, SUCH AS BUILDINGS, WALL PATTERNS, CEILINGS AND MOST IMPORTANTLY TO UNDERSTAND THE FUNDAMENTALS/PRINCIPLES OF SPATIAL DESIGN. WE WERE TO HEAD OUTSIDE TO SEE HOW THESE CRUCIAL STATEMENTS CARRY SUCH AN IMPORTANT ROLE ON OUR SUBJECT THAT IS TO TAKE WANDER AROUND AND TAKE PICTURES IN ACCORDANCE OF RELATING TOWARDS POINTS,DOTS AND LINES.

POINTS and LINES (EXERCISE PART TWO)

After selecting our photos that has been approved, we then continue to carry on our next exercise by identify each outcome of points and lines given with different aspect roles for each of these three pictures...

POINTS

judging by this first role, this picture was placed with numerous type of nails. for it's reason, the purpose of it is to identify and fathom the function of points as we may call it "dots" in spatial design theory. therefore, it is to study the connection and its link upon different areas of space.

lines

Furthermore, the second picture determines the use and its functionality of lines. by its conviction, lines are simply to identitfy the purpose of the core structure of how shapes form and so on...

POINTS And Lines

Lastly, here lies the final outcome how what points and lines have to offer when they meet each other, forming in fusion of shapes, with its core form of structure and its connection of points.

PLANE + VOID & SHADE + SHADOW

Moving on towards our next agenda for spatial design, we were ought to produce a plane structure using modeling card as our material to build our structure and modeling card as the base of it as it stands, under the requirement of not exceeding over 5 meter height and also to signify the foundation of void and it's purposes.

From what I've learned and gained the experience of doing this assignment, to sole purpose or aim of it is to emphasize how void is one of the form of illusion in terms of leaving empty spaces in between planes, GIVING A SHOW OF DEPTH AND VOLUME BEHIND IT and how it can LINK TO create multiple ideas with it.

Void

PLANE

aS FAR AS i CAN TELL, THE DEFINTION OF PLANE ISA line extended in a direction other than its intrinsic direction LEABING AN ANSWER THAT  plane has length and width BUT EXCLUDING DEPTH UNLIKE HOW VOID HAS IT.

introducing shade and shadow

moving onward, we were introduce by our lecturer how shade and shadow play utmost important role for spatial design. as of what I can judge, one of the main reasons is to signify the implications of  how humans projectile the meaning of it, as to shade and shadow brings many outcomes depending of its angle and to taking picture of it. Light plays a crucial part too, having no light is the primary source of not having any shade and shadow on it.

Ancient Architecture form and scale

Our next topic of the subject indicates the start of how architecture form and scaling makes spatial design fun out of it. A group of 3 including myself had to study the basic structure form of a ancient architecture building, for our group we were assigned to take Forbidden City allocated in China as our prime example to start our next exercise, using all the shapes made out of modeling cards that we've done over the week just for the purpose of this exercise only.

Foundation and floor plan of the forbidden city

A SIMPLE REPLICA OF THE FORBIDDEN CITY

AS THE RESULT OF CONSTRUCTING THE BUILDING, WE WERE TOLD THAT TO TAKE PICTURES WHILE IMPLYING THE ROLE OF SHADE AND SHADOW TOO. INDICATING WHAT SHADE AND SHADOW HAVE TO OFFER ALSO FOR GIVING THE FUNCTION BEHIND EVERYTHING WHEN IT COMES TO ARCHITECTURE.

scale of human figures applied on the replica building

Furthermore, we were asked to place human figures by the scale from smallest, average to the biggest size applying how we observe in human perspectives.

Here we have the three human scales to prove it's function onto people's perspectives of seeing things.

When it comes to the smallest human scale aligned in the
architecture building, the form immediately changes
where perspective indicates a fixture of a human inside the
pillars of a big building. Therefore, it creates a view point
of minimalism between two objects.

Since the human scale is median and being placed beside
the building, it’s form of both individuals are more likely to
be a perspective between an average architecture
building and a medium based human figure

With the biggest human scale oriented in front of the
architecture building, the perspective of form becomes
more animated in the sense of surrealism artwork where
the human figure is evidently taller than the building itself
In this picture.

RHYTHM AND REPeTiTION

rhythm

onto our next topic of spatial design, our lecturer told us to create a rhythm between different designs but having the same amount of design applying to create the form of unity and a sense of flow for the structure.

REpeTiTION

A sign of repetition means its the indication of repeating. for it's objective, it is one of the fundamentals of how we carry out forming the same shapes to create repetitive illusions for spatial design.

HARMONY AND LIGHT

Embarking towards our final assignment, we were given the task of creating the structure of our final submission in a small form first, producing two objects at top and bottom. Finally submerging them together to form a complete structure.
